Rahul Sarkar, Kala Bhavan-MFA

Rahul Sarkar's MFA display at the Student Exhibition of Kala Bhavan, last month, explored his own experience as an androgynous man.

We were almost missing it while seeing the displays at Natya Bhavan, as it was mounted a little apart on a raised platform. S and I thoroughly enjoyed what we saw of the Exhibition (less than half, actually) - on the first of its three days - there, at Nandan and in the open campus. But Sarkar's work felt like a class apart: in the richness and profundity of its content, the sheer scale of the artworks; and the concept and execution of the mount. I wish I could bring home a catalogue.

Trained in print making in RBU and then Vishwa Bharati, the student seemed all set to commence his artistic career; and in a brief conversation we had, said - in a tone that sounded both desperate and determined - that he would take on WHATEVER opportunity came his way. The Student Exhibition was a happy coincidence of our trip in Santiniketan and it became one of the highlights of our stay.

I'll look forward to Rahul's work in the near future... I'm sure he is waiting to happen!
